Abstract - The Extent of the Contacts between Renaissance Europe and the Islamic World
Prof. George Saliba Abstract As a follow up to my earlier work on the connection of Copernicus with Arabic astronomy, I will focus in this lecture on the activities of the two earliest Italian scientific academies, the Accademia Secretorum Naturae (before 1600) and the Accademia de Lincei (1600-1630). The lecture will in particular discuss the activities of the most distinguished members of those academies, Giambattista della Porta (1535-1615), and Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and their particular relationship to Arabic science and interaction with it. The talk will reveal new findings illustrated with reference to the works of these two men, as well as others in those academies.
