
Professor Al-Hassani: Short biography*
Professor Al-Hassani is currently an Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering and an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures, Faculty of Humanities, University of Manchester. Previously, he occupied the chair of High Energy Rate Engineering at UMIST. He is an acknowledged world expert in the decommissioning of offshore installations and in major plant-related accident investigations. Since 1968, Professor Salim Al-Hassani, has published over 200 papers in international journals and books. He has supervised 40 PhD, 50 MSc students and numerous post-doctoral Fellows from all parts of the world. He has received numerous awards and held patents on engineering. Work on Muslim Heritage Professor Salim Al-Hassani has a special interest in the history of Islamic science, where he has made his mark in the application of applied modern engineering analysis to the machines of Al-Jazari and Taqi al-Din, recreating their work in 3D. He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation (FSTC), publisher of www.MuslimHeritage.com, and founder of the 1001 Inventions touring exhibition, and built as a global educational initiative. He is a highly recognised international speaker on the topic of the Muslim contribution to building the foundations of modern civilisation. He has delivered more than 150 lectures and is the Chief Editor of more than 300 publications on Muslim Heritage including the ground breaking book, 1001 Inventions: Discover the Muslim Heritage in our World (Manchester: FSTC, 2006). The 1001 Inventions book is considered an essential reading for all those interested to learn about the Muslim civilisation, especially Muslim youth, in order to change wrong perceptions about the role of Muslim inventions in today's schools, universities, homes, hospitals, market, cities, world and universe.
