Dark Ages
Many scientific and technological inventions and innovations that are used in modern society have a Muslim origin, but this is frequently not realized. Traditionally both the media and educational establishments have not accounted for the 1000 years that lie between the Roman Empire and the European Renaissance. In Europe, we sometimes call this period the Dark Ages and Medieval Period, meaning the period between two great Civilizations (the Greek and modern European). In reality, this period represents the Islamic golden age, when Muslims led the world in Science and Technology, and from where the European Renaissance took much of its impetus and knowledge. Many people, including Muslims, are not aware of the thousands of innovations and inventions made during that period and which still continue to be used to the present day. Therefore, through its work, FSTC seeks to replace this ?missing piece' in the history of science, and through this to enhance social cohesion nationally and peace internationally. As HRH Prince Charles said in an enlightening speech pronounced in Oxford in 1993, entitled Islam and the West: "If there is much misunderstanding in the West about the nature of Islam, there is also much ignorance about the debt our own culture and civilisation owe to the Islamic world. It is a failure, which stems, I think, from the straight jacket of history, which we have inherited. The medieval Islamic world, from Central Asia to the shores of the Atlantic, was a world where scholars and men of learning flourished. But because we have tended to see Islam as the enemy of the West, as an alien culture, society, and system of belief, we have tended to ignore or erase its great relevance to our own history."
