Yusuf al-Mu'taman ibn Hud

Full name:
Yusuf ibn Ahmad al-Mu'taman ibn Hūd

One of the most interesting documents to come to light in the past decade has been that discovered by Djebbar and Hogendijk, a substantial part of the mathematical compendium, Book of Perfection (Istikmal), written in the 11th century by Yusuf al-Mu'taman ibn Hud, a savant who ruled the Spanish kingdom of Saragossa from 1081 until his assasination in 1085. A striking feature of the structure of the treatise is its philosophically based classification of theorems according to the Aristotelian concepts of genera and specides.
