1001 Inventions in LA extended for another ten weeks
1001 Inventions in California Science Center (CSC), Los Angeles, extended for ten weeks until March 2012 due to popular demand. Blockbuster show about science and technology in Muslim Civilization has already attracted 400,000 visitors to LA's Premier Science Center.
Los Angeles, 2nd January 2012: Due to popular demand, the award-winning 1001 inventions exhibition, will continue it's run at the California Science Center (CSC) for an additional ten weeks. More than 400,000 people have already visited the blockbuster show which highlights the enormous contribution to science and technology made by men and women of many different faiths in Muslim Civilization.
Since it launched in London in January 2010, the 1001 Inventions exhibition has attracted more than 2 million visitors during its continuing journey across Europe and the United States. The exhibition opened at the world-renowned California Science Center on the 27th of May 2011 and was scheduled to exhibit there until the end of the year. During that time it attracted enormous interest from different communities across the region as well as attention from local and national media channels.
Speaking on behalf of 1001 Inventions, Prof. Mohamed El-Gomati OBE, said: "1001 Inventions has enjoyed enormous success over the last 12 months, and the cornerstone of that has been our exhibition's very successful residency at the leading science center in California. We're delighted to announce that, due to popular demand, the 1001 Inventions exhibition will be staying in Los Angeles for an additional ten weeks, allowing even more people in the Golden State to experience our interactive science history show."

1001 Inventions will be open at the California Science Center until the 11th of March 2012, free of charge, seven days a week. After its time in Los Angeles, the exhibition travels to Washington, DC, where it will open on the 30th June 2012 for a 6-month residency at the National Geographic Museum.
The 1001 Inventions international touring exhibition enjoyed its US West Coast Premiere at the world-renowned California Science Center, in Los Angeles, on the 27th of May 2011. Following this official public launch, the exhibition will be open to the public daily between 10am and 5pm, free of charge, until the 11th of March, 2012.
25th May 2011. US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, officially opened an award-winning exhibition about the scientific achievements of Muslim Civilization at the California Science Center in Los Angeles today. The 1001 Inventions exhibition, which has already attracted more than one million visitors during the past year, landed at California's most popular museum, at a VIP launch day attended by LA County Sheriff Lee Baca and Ambassadors from LA-based foreign Consulates.
Speaking via video, Secretary Clinton praised the work of the 1001 Inventions initiative for "celebrating a millennium of science and innovation in the Muslim world," and described the launch of the exhibition as "an exciting day."
During her speech, Mrs. Clinton remarked that "the Muslim world has a proud history of innovators" and highlighted the achievements of people like Fatima Al-Fihri, who founded the world's first modern university, and master engineer Al-Jazari who created the crank mechanisms that drive every plane, train and automobile on the planet.
Prof. Salim Al-Hassani, Chairman of 1001 Inventions, commented: "We're honored that Secretary Clinton agreed to launch our exhibition here at one of the most prestigious science museums in the world. California Science Center has an international reputation for excellence in providing engaging and entertaining science experiences for young and old alike.
"The goal of 1001 Inventions is to highlight the astounding contribution that Muslim civilization has made in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and how those advances still affect our lives today. More than a million people have already visited the 1001 Inventions exhibition during the first year of its global tour and that is the greatest endorsement we could ever hope for."

The 1001 Inventions exhibition is currently on a five-year global tour, sponsored by ALJ Community Initiatives. Following blockbuster runs in London, Istanbul and New York, it will open at the prestigious California Science Center, in Los Angeles, on the 27th of May 2011 for a seven-month run. The exhibition reveals the forgotten history of men and women, from a variety of faiths and backgrounds, whose contributions to the advancement of scholarship and technology during the Middle Ages helped pave the way for the European Renaissance. This period of history from the 7th century to 17th century is commonly – though erroneously — referred to as the "Dark Ages."
The 1001 Inventions was recently crowned "Best Touring Exhibition" of the year at the annual Museums and Heritage Excellence Awards in London – considered by many to be the "Oscars" of the Museum world – fighting off stiff competition from some of the world's biggest names in exhibitions.

This exhibition honors the remarkable accomplishments of Muslims throughout history. From a woman who founded a University in the ninth century, to a thirteenth century inventor and mechanical engineer, to a surgeon whose writings influenced European medicine for hundreds of years, and so many more.
And of course, we're looking at the impact of technology in the Muslim world right now as young people throughout the Middle East and North Africa find new ways to use social networking to get organized and to express their aspirations. Connection technologies offer an unprecedented opportunity. A platform through which everyone, from farmers to students to entrepreneurs, can exchange ideas and hatch plans for the world's next great invention.
But technology does not decide the future. People do. So as this exhibition shows, the Muslim world has a proud history of innovators. Now is the time to tap in to that legacy to harness the power of science and technology, and to create new pathways to prosperity. The exhibition enjoyed tremendous success at its inaugural US venue, the New York Hall of Science, where it increased visitor numbers by more than 25% and attracted brand new audiences to the Queens-based museum. The exhibition is expected to attract even bigger audiences once it moves to California and takes up residence at the Golden State's largest hands-on science center.
The California Science Center is the most popular museum destination in Southern California, receiving more than 18 million visitors since opening in February 1998. An admission-free venue, the Science Center offers permanent and changing exhibits and related educational programming through several galleries spanning more than 400,000 sq. ft (37,000 sq. metres).

The CEO and President of NYSCI, Dr. Margaret Honey, carried out a symbolic transfer of the exhibition to Jeffrey Rudolph, the President and CEO of the California Science Center, by handing over a reproduction of the Scribe Clock – a 13th century invention by master engineer Al-Jazari, who is one of the central characters within the exhibition.
California Science Center is based in Exposition Park which is also home to an IMAX cinema, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Natural History Museum of LA County, the Exposition Park Rose Garden, the California African American Museum, the Science Center School and Amgen Center for Science Learning.
The 1001 Inventions exhibition at California Science Center was featured on the ABC7 channel, as part of the "7 Live" programme broadcast across the San Francisco Bay Area, on the 17th June 2011.

The exhibition 1001 Inventions opened in early December 2010 in New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) and has already attracted several thousand visitors on its US debut. The exhibition's US premiere was highly anticipated after it enjoyed blockbuster runs in both London and Istanbul. The 1001 Inventions exhibition, which highlights the scientific legacy of Muslim civilization in our modern age, made its United States debut at the NYSCI at a special event attended by local media, academics and philanthropists, including Mohammed Jameel, patron of Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives (ALJCI).
Professor Salim T S Al-Hassani, Chairman of the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC) and 1001 Inventions, was one of the keynote speakers at the Uniday (Students Day) conference on 22nd of October 2011 at Stadthalle in Bielefeld, Germany.
The Royal Society: European Discovery of Arabic Cultureby: The Editorial Board This public lecture was organised jointly by the Royal Society and the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation (FSTC). It traced the stages in the discovery of Arabic culture by European scholars from the early middle ages until the early-modern period.
1001 Inventions, the award-winning global initiative about the history of science in Muslim civilisation, will launch its new venue in Abu Dhabi, UAE, as part of the Abu Dhabi Science Festival in November 19th, 2011. The free educational showcase, which was recently crowned "Best Touring Exhibition", will welcome visitors at the Abu Dhabi Corniche until December 24th, 2011. Following successful residencies in London, Istanbul, New York and Los Angeles, where it has attracted a combined audience of more than 1,500,000 visitors, the 1001 Inventions touring exhibition is launching a bi-lingual Arabic-English touring exhibition in response to public demand.
