1001 Inventions Distinguished in London by the AMSS (UK)

In a meeting organised in London on June 5, 2009, The Association of Muslim Social Scientists in the United Kingdom (AMSS - UK) distinguished the Global Initiative 1001 Inventions by granting it the prestigious Building Bridges Award for 2009.

The award was presented conjointly to 1001 Inventions and to the British Council's 'Our Shared Europe' Project. In the press release issued by the AMSS-UK, it is explained that its prestigious Building Bridges Award for 2009 has been jointly given to the British Council, in recognition of the 'Our Shared Europe' project which seeks to generate awareness and better understanding of Muslim contributions to European culture and society; and to 1001 Inventions, in recognition of the notable contribution of the 1001 Inventions educational project to reveal the rich heritage that the Muslim community share with other communities in the UK, Europe and across the world. Both awards were presented during the third AMSS(UK) Annual Zaki Badawi Memorial Lecture held on 5th June 2009 at the University of Westminster, London, UK.

The Association of Muslim Social Scientists (AMSS UK) is a non-profit organization based in London and committed to the development of perspectives on contemporary local and global issues through research, scholarship, conferences and publications.

The AMSS - UK presents two annual Awards, the Building Bridges Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Building Bridges Award was inaugurated in 2003. The Award is given for outstanding accomplishment by individuals, groups and organizations. Previous distinguished recipients have been Charles Le Gai Eaton (2003), Karen Armstrong (2004), the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams (2005), Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of Spain and Prime Minister Recep Tayyib Erdogan of Turkey (2006), and Professor Ekmeledin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the OIC (2007).
